How to Choose a Walker or Rollator
Advice from our South Surrey showroom
Start with how you walk and where you go. Then check four things: the handle height, the weight you will lift, the wheels and the brakes.

STEP 1 OF 6
Match the frame to how you walk
A four wheel rollator rolls with you and has a seat for rests. The Evolution Trillium has a 1.5 inch seat cushion, and its rear forks are offset so your heels clear the frame.
A two wheel folding walker gives firm support indoors. The Two Button Folding Walker has front wheels and rear glide caps. The Air-Go Walker sits between the two, with two wheels and a seat. After foot or ankle surgery, a Steerable Knee Walker keeps weight off that leg.

Fit the handles, then the seat
Handles adjust, but each model has its own range. On the Xpresso Zero Mini, the handles set from 28.5 to 33.5 inches. Both AeroWalk frames start at 31.5 inches. For a tall person, the Rehasense SPACE LX Large reaches 40.2 inches.
Seat height comes with the size you pick. The Evolution Trillium comes in Mini, Regular and Tall, with 18, 21 and 24 inch seats. The AeroWalk Standard has a 20 inch seat and the Tall a 23 inch seat. If you will sit often, try the seat in person.

Think about who lifts it
If the rollator rides in a car, its weight matters every day. The byACRE Carbon Ultralight weighs 10.6 lb. The Evolution Trillium weighs 14 lb, and the AeroWalk weighs 14.8 lb.
Folded size matters too. The Carbon Ultralight folds to 9.8 inches and stands up on its own. The neXus 3 also stands on its own when folded, even with its bag attached. The Two Button Folding Walker folds flat enough to go behind a car seat.

Choose wheels for where you walk
Small wheels suit smooth floors. The Two Button Folding Walker has 5 inch front wheels, and its rear glide caps slide on most indoor floors. Bigger wheels roll over bumps more easily. The AeroWalk's 9 inch front wheels take a threshold without stopping dead.
Outdoor walks ask more of the wheels. The Evolution Trillium's 8 inch polyurethane tires handle a broken sidewalk. The Aluminum Rollator's 7.5 inch casters handle grass and light gravel. For trails, the byACRE Carbon Overland runs 10.2 inch air filled tires.

Test the brakes and grips
Brakes work differently from model to model. The neXus 3 has cable free braking, so there is nothing to stretch or adjust as it ages. On the U-Step Neuro, the brakes stay on until you squeeze the handles. Always lock the brakes before you sit.
Hands matter too. The Air-Go Walker has oversized cushioned handles that are easy to grasp with arthritis. If gripping hurts your wrists, hands or shoulders, the Simplicity 2 is an upright rollator that lets your forearms carry your weight.

Check the weight rating and width
Check the rating for the exact size. The Evolution Trillium Mini and Regular carry 300 lb, and the Tall carries 350 lb. The Xpresso Zero sizes carry the same. The neXus 3 is rated to 441 lb. The byACRE Carbon Ultralight carries 285 lb, the trade for its light frame.
Then measure your narrowest door and your tightest turn. The Two Button Folding Walker is 22.5 inches wide, and the neXus 3 is 23 inches wide. The U-Step Neuro turns inside 29 inches. Condo hallways and elevators reward a narrow frame.

Try the brakes, seat and fold
Our showroom is in South Surrey, minutes from White Rock. Wear the shoes you walk in most, and bring whoever lifts the walker into the car. Then walk a few rollators across the floor, lock the brakes and try each fold.
Think about your own routes while you try them. The White Rock promenade and the hill up from the waterfront ask more of the wheels and brakes than a trip down the hall.

Walker questions
Is a rollator seat comfortable to rest on?
It depends on the seat, so sit on a few. The Evolution Trillium has a 1.5 inch cushion rather than a strip of padding. The Xpresso Zero's back strap is wider than most, so leaning back is comfortable. Always lock both brakes before you sit down.
Do rollators come in different sizes?
Yes, and the size usually sets the seat height. The Trillium comes in Mini, Regular and Tall, with 18, 21 and 24 inch seats. The neXus 3 comes in 19, 22 and 24 inch seat heights. The byACRE Carbon Ultralight comes in three seat widths.
Can I carry shopping on a rollator?
Yes. Many of ours have a bag, basket or pouch. The Xpresso Zero's basket folds away and comes off. The Aluminum Rollator has a zippered pouch under the seat. The neXus 3 has a storage bag, and it still stands on its own when folded.
Can a rollator turn into a transport chair?
Yes. The Airgo Fusion becomes a transport chair when you turn the backrest around. The footrests are included. It suits someone who can walk a block but not three. It comes in 18, 20 and 23 inch seat heights, and each size carries 300 lb.
What is a knee walker for?
A knee walker is for the weeks after foot or ankle surgery, when that leg must carry no weight. Our Steerable Knee Walker's split knee pad adjusts for either leg. The front wheels steer, dual hand brakes control stopping, and it carries 350 lb. We rent them too.
Is there a walker for a neurological gait?
Yes. The U-Step Neuro is a seven wheel walker made for a neurological gait rather than general weakness. Its brakes stay on until you squeeze the handles. Laser and sound cueing are available. The laser puts a line on the floor to step over when a foot freezes. We work with a team of occupational therapists and can provide one when needed.
What should I bring to try walkers near White Rock?
Wear your usual walking shoes, and bring whoever will lift the walker into the car. Our showroom is at Unit 930, 15057 32 Ave, in South Surrey. Try the brakes, the seat and the fold on a few models, and please call 778-545-0102 before you come.
